  6. This software has been tested for use on PowerBook and Desktop machines running Mac OS 8.  Do not distribute!

  9. This document provides late-breaking news about the File Synchronization control panel. You may want to print this document to keep with the user’s manual for your computer.

  12. Installing File Synchronization

  14. There are three versions of the File Synchronization control panel: “68K”, “PowerPC”, and “Fat”.  If you are not sure which version is appropriate for your computer, choose “Fat”.

  16. Install the control panel of your choice by dropping it on your closed system folder. If you wish to install the Apple Guide file, please drag that file to the “Global Guide Files” folder inside the “Extensions” folder in your system folder.

  21. If you previously used PowerBook File Assistant, the File Synchronization control panel will recognize your existing File Assistant settings, but File Assistant will not recognize setting created by the File Synchronization control panel.

  24. Scanning and Listing

The File Synchronization control panel offers a number of new options that did not exist in PowerBook File Assistant. In particular, you now have the option to scan a linked pair, which does not actually do any copying, but shows you a list of what would have happened if you had synchronized.  Also, if you do synchronize, you will not see any errors until the synchronization has completed.  If you would prefer to see errors as they occur, you can change your Preferences in the Edit menu.

  31. File Synchronization does not care about file creation dates, because some programs do not preserve file creation dates when you save a new version of a document. You can require File Synchronization to match creation dates using Preferences from the Edit menu.
